What is TMS Treatment for Depression?

Depression is a very serious, often debilitating mental illness. Many people who suffer from the condition will undergo a number of treatments or medication for their depression in an attempt to control and improve their mood. One of the options that has shown promise in the area of mood improvement is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, also known as TMS treatment for depression, is noninvasive and utilizes magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. In general, TMS treatment is used when other types of depression treatments such as medication and psychotherapy have proven to be ineffective.

When a person receives TMS treatment for depression, an electromagnetic coil is situated on the scalp, high up by the forehead. This treatment involves a magnetic pulse stimulating the nerve cells in the brain that relate to depression and the mood. It has also been shown to have an effect on areas of the brain that have decreased activity in those who suffer from chronic depression.

Some of the symptoms you may experience after TMS for depression are lightheadedness, minor headache, and discomfort in the scalp where the treatment was administered. TMS also does not require anesthesia to be administered.
